The Custom House Sketch of The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne refers to real places in Salem in the Custom House chapter of The Scarlet Letter. Among those places is the Essex Institute, now part of the Peabody Essex Museum. In the Custom House sketch on page 31, the Surveryor contemplates placing his papers in the Essex Institute.
