Coat of Arms, The Granary Burial Ground, Boston, Massachusetts.

Family crests, such as this finely carved coat of arms, were a proud possession of some English settlers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They are often found embellishing tombs and gravestones and served as important station-in-life symbols. As the 18th century progressed they became less popular and were not used in public after the Revolution.
